The Power of Good Stress: Growing Through Challenge and Connection

The Power of Good Stress: Growing Through Challenge and Connection

Recently, I read an excerpt from Good Stress: The Health Benefits of Doing Hard Things, and it instantly resonated with me. The author shared a story about a childhood moment—stepping into discomfort, facing humiliation, and ultimately growing through the experience. It was a story of vulnerability, courage, and the deep need we all have to feel like we belong. Having recently ventured into the world of launching a Reformer Pilates Studio, it got me thinking: how often do we avoid challenges in our fitness routines—or even in life—because they initially make us feel uncomfortable?

In the studio, I see this play out every day. Many of our new members walk into the studio feeling apprehensive. They look at the reformer equipment and feel a pang of doubt: “What if I can’t do this? What if I’m not strong enough, flexible enough, or fit enough?” It’s that little voice of self-doubt whispering in their ear.

But something magical happens when they step onto the reformer for the first time. With a bit of guidance, some encouragement, and that all-important first push, they realise: “Wow, I can do this. This feels good. This is something for me.” That’s the beauty of good stress—the kind that gently pushes us out of our comfort zones, nudging us to grow stronger in both body and mind.

The Gift of Good Stress

Not too many of us escape the day to day stresses of modern life, however it is important for us to make the distinction that not all stress is harmful. Good stress is like a friendly nudge—it challenges us, helps us build resilience, and strengthens our ability to navigate life’s ups and downs. Reformer Pilates is a perfect example of this. It’s a space where you can safely challenge your body while staying present with your mind.

The movements demand focus and connection, encouraging you to leave your worries at the door and just be in the moment. With each session, you’ll feel stronger, more balanced, and increasingly capable—not just in the studio, but in life.

Mindful Moments During the Festive Season

As the festive season approaches (less than 4 weeks away—yikes, I can sense the pang of panic!), it’s a good time to reflect on the kinds of stress we’re experiencing. The holidays bring their own set of pressures: the rush to prepare, the gatherings, the endless to-do lists. While some of this stress may be unavoidable, it’s important to ask ourselves: Is this the kind of stress that’s helping me grow? Or is it the kind that’s depleting me?

Becoming aware of how these stressors are playing out in life is the first step to choosing something different, perhaps something that serves you better, at this time and in this moment. Reformer Pilates can be a moment of calm in the holiday chaos—a chance to momentarily retreat from the festive or general everyday chaos and reconnect with yourself. A place to prioritise your well-being, and channel your energy into something that makes you feel good.

Growth Through Movement

One of the things I love most about our studio is seeing members grow—not just physically, but emotionally. They walk in feeling unsure, and over time, they discover their strength and potential. It’s a reminder that stepping into discomfort, even when it feels daunting, is often where the most profound growth begins.

This holiday season, as you navigate the busyness of life, remember to take a moment for yourself. Embrace the kind of stress that lifts you, not the kind that drains you. And know that every small step you take—whether it’s trying a new class, challenging yourself with a new movement, adding that extra express class or stretch to your session, or simply showing up— they are all small steps toward becoming the best version of yourself!
