Prolonged stress adds a layer of complexity to our health and can disrupt the many facets of our “whole” being including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Here are a few unexpected physical signs your body may be sharing to get your attention.
Ever stopped to think about how your body talks back when life gets too hectic? Stress isn’t just about feeling overwhelmed or anxious, sometimes, it whispers (or shouts) through physical symptoms that we might not immediately connect to amidst the fast pace of day to day life.
Imagine this: You're juggling work, family, and perhaps even sneaking in some time for social life, a hobby or exercise. It's all going smoothly—or so you think until suddenly you are experiencing challenges with your sleep, your digestion feels out of whack or you're suddenly experiencing hair loss or brittle nails. Most women may put these down as random unconnected issues but it’s possible your body is signalling a red alert that your current lifestyle is unsustainable, and she needs some support.
Some Physical Telltale Signs of Stress to Look Out For…
1. Mysterious Aches & Pains
Ever felt like your muscles have their own mind, tensing up like a defensive wall? Stress can manifest as muscle tension or pain, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back. It's like your body's way of saying, "Hey, let’s slow down a bit!"
2. Sleep Struggles
When your mind is on a never-ending loop of to-do lists, quality sleep may be evading you. You might find yourself tossing and turning, trying to catch those elusive Z’s. Consistently high cortisol levels can wreak havoc with your circadian rhythm creating challenges not only getting to sleep but also staying asleep.
3. Gut Reactions
Ever had butterflies in your stomach before a big event? Chronic stress can escalate this into ongoing digestive woes, from indigestion, to bloating and even irritable bowel syndrome. It’s your gut’s way of joining the conversation on your stress levels.
4. Weight Gain or Loss
Have you noticed your jeans fitting a bit snugger, even though your diet hasn’t changed much? Stress can lead to weight gain by affecting your hormones and increasing cravings for comfort foods. It can also lead to loss of appetite, leading to unhealthy weight loss. It's your body's not-so-subtle way of signally an imbalance.
5. Hair Loss & Brittle Nails
A deterioration in hair health or loss, or a change in the texture and condition of your nails could be your body’s shout-out against stress. When experiencing prolonged stress your body turns its attention to other priorities to keep you going.
So What’s Really Happening?
When you're stressed, your body goes into ‘fight or flight’ mode, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This is great for short-term challenges, not so great when the alarm keeps ringing and we don’t provide the body the opportunity to reset. Over time, prolonged and chronic stress can lead to high cortisol levels and drive adrenal fatigue, often resulting in a wide range of physical, mental and emotional symptoms.
Reflection Time
Think about the last time you felt physically off. Was it during a particularly stressful period? Reflecting on these connections and building conscious awareness can be the first step in understanding your unique stress signature. Next time your body sends a signal—whether it's a headache, a sleepless night, a digestive issue, or unexpected weight changes—consider it might be more than just random. It could be your body’s way of getting your attention and asking you to slow down and tune in.
Taking Action
Acknowledging these symptoms is just the start. Transforming your experience of stress might mean setting boundaries, finding time for relaxation, changing up your nutrition and lifestyle or even seeking support through a qualified practitioner or wellness program.
